I live and work in Haverhill and although I can see the point of an anaerobic digestion facility, I do not understand why it is being built so close to a built up area.
The waste being processed is not being completely sourced locally, and so will need to be transported in. No facility of this type is completely odour free, and to build it so close to housing areas seems to have no regard for the quality of life of those living nearby.
The people of Haverhill are already subject to the smells produced by IFF, which although often pleasant, can affect allergies and other respiratory conditions.
The odours produced by the anaerobic digestion facility would not be anywhere near as pleasant, and have the capacity to be more much more intrusive and irritating.
The sewage plant at the opposite end of the town can also produce some distinctly unpleasant aromas. This would mean that the town would be bracketed by three sets of conflicting smells. This is not how anyone would want to choose to live and work.
While parts of the A1307 are currently being upgraded the road itself is very busy and the addition of a whole new set of heavy lorries using the road, often at peak times would not help the flow of traffic in and out of Haverhill.
I can see no distinct advantage for the people of Haverhill to site this facility so close to the town.
I would be grateful if the planning committee would ask for a less intrusive site to be considered.
